IPI CONDEMNS MURDER OF FORBES RUSSIA EDITOR
IPR Strategic Information Database, 12 July 2004
Paul Khlebnikov , editor-in-chief of the Russian edition of Forbes magazine, was shot and killed outside his office in Moscow on 9 July. Khlebnikov, 41, an American of Russian descent, was shot from a passing car about 100 meters from Forbes' editorial offices in northern Moscow after he left work in the evening. He was hit four times and died in hospital. Police suspect that his murder was a contract killing, linked to his work as a journalist. Formerly a senior editor with Forbes magazine in the United States, Khlebnikov had reported extensively about Russian political developments, corruption and organised crime. The first issue of the Russian edition of Forbes was published in April 2004. In May the magazine published a list of Russia's 100 richest people, some of whom later protested that their fortunes were greatly exaggerated. Khlebnikov's first book "Godfather of the Kremlin: Boris Berezovsky and the Looting of Russia", was published in 2000.

Kremlin backs hunt for killer of editor
The Daily Telegraph, 12 July 2004, By Julius StraussMoscow Correspondent
RUSSIA's prosecutor-general has taken personal charge of the investigation into the murder in Moscow of an American magazine editor with numerous enemies among the country's richest and most influential figures. Friends and family of Paul Klebnikov , who moved to Russia six months ago to launch the Russian edition of Forbes magazine, gathered in a church in Moscow yesterday in tribute to their colleague. Klebnikov, 41, married with three children and of Russian descent, was shot dead outside his office on Friday. A black Lada car believed to have been used by his killer has been recovered by police. The decision of the prosecutor-general, Vladimir Ustinov, to take control of the inquiry is said to reflect the view of Russian authorities that the attack was linked to the journalist's work. The murder is the highest profile killing of a journalist in Russia since that of Dmitry Kholodov in 1994, who was compiling a case against corruption in the military.

It is assumed by colleagues that the killing was linked to his journalistic work, but the exact motive is not yet clear. According to the Moscow Times, it could have been related to Forbes' list of Russia's 100 richest people, to his investigations into exiled oligarch Boris Berezovsky, on whom he was said to be writing a second book, or to investigations into the connections between Russian oil company Surgutneftegaz and oil trader Kinex. These links have allegedly been to the benefit of Gennady Timchenko, who has been described as the manager of President Vladimir Putin's personal wealth.
