NOBODY was more optimistic about the future of Russia than Paul Klebnikov , an American magazine editor with whom I dined last Monday, four days before he was gunned down in a contract-style killing outside his Moscow office. Over plates of roast duck and pelmeni -fish and meat dumplings -Klebnikov, 41, told me of his wish to publish positive stories about the country his grandparents had fled during the revolution.

Klebnikov, 41, editor of the Russian edition of Forbes, the American business magazine, was shot four times by an assailant in a car as he left his Moscow office on Friday. JOURNALIST KILLED IN RUSSIA
SBS 6.30pm TV World News Transcripts, 11 July 2004
Hundreds of journalists are expected to attend the funeral of the editor of the Russian edition of the Forbes business magazine. 41-year-old Paul Klebnikov was shot four times as he left his office in Moscow. He'd been threatened with attack after publishing a list of Russia's richest businessmen. Paul Klebnikov specialised in a dangerous field - the financial affairs of Russia's super-wealthy. Mr Klebnikov's murder had all the hallmarks of a contract killing. His assassins lay in wait outside his office, as he left late at night, they shot at him 10 times from close range. He lived just long enough to tell colleagues he had no idea who his attackers were. Two months ago, he caused a stir. His new 'Forbes Russia' business magazine detailed the fortunes of Russia's 100 richest people. Mr Klebnikov said he thought the days of gangster capitalism was past.
PAUL KLEBNIKOV , 'FORBES RUSSIA' EDITOR: It's a stage moving away from the shadow economy, moving away from, um - well, let's say black market type of mentality, yes? Um, towards a more civilised, transparent, um, open form of capitalism.
The brutal murder of Paul Klebnikov on this quiet Moscow street is particularly shocking because he was a foreigner, an American, working for an international magazine. It's possible he was a victim of Russia's gangster capitalism. ...

Murdered writer `was like a bull in a china shop'
The Sunday Telegraph, 11 July 2004, BY CATHERINE BELTON in Moscow
BORIS BEREZOVSKY, the British-based Russian oligarch, last night described the United States journalist shot dead in Moscow on Friday as being "like a bull in a china shop" in the way he reported on Russia's business elite. Paul Klebnikov , editor of the newly launched Russian edition of Forbes magazine, wrote a controversial book on Berezovsky's rise to riches. The oligarch described Mr Klebnikov, 41, as "not an honest journalist," but said he would nonetheless miss him. Mr Klebnikov had earned a reputation for relentless investigative reporting. He was said by leading figures in Russia's publishing industry to have been working on a follow-up to Godfather of the Kremlin, his book on Mr Berezovsky, when he flew to Moscow last week. It was not clear whether the new book also centred on Mr Berezovsky, or on other aspects of Russia's business world.
